Gronningsater Named Scholar Athlete; 9 All-ACC Academic

DURHAM, N.C. – Duke fencing senior Eoin Gronningsater was named the 2020 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Fencing Scholar-Athlete of the Year, as announced by the conference office Thursday.

Gronningsater has had an outstanding career in his four years with the Blue Devils and was selected a 2020 Weaver-James-Corrigan Postgraduate Scholarship Award recipient from the ACC and was tabbed Duke's Senior Male Student-Athlete of the Year on Wednesday.

This year, Gronningsater looked to become the first Blue Devil male foilist to grab three All-America honors in his career before the rest of the season was canceled due to COVID-19 concerns.

This season, the Brooklyn, N.Y., native posted a 42-14 regular season ledger to help lead the men's foil squad to a 21-4 regular season record. He placed sixth during the individual portion of the ACC Championships before concluding the year in fourth on his home strips at the Mid-Atlantic/South Regional in Durham.

He owns a 3.81 career grade-point average while majoring in political science.

Alongside Gronningsater, seniors Jonathan Schwartzman and Agoston Walter, juniors Julia Gianneschi, Maria Papadopoulos and Brycen Rushing and sophomores Huda Aldadah, Alex Gorman and Zoe Superville were named to the All-ACC Academic Team for the 2020 campaign.

2020 marks the fourth time Gronningsater earned the honor, while Gianneschi and Rushing are on the academic team for the third time. Aldadah, Papadopoulos, Schwartzman and Superville were selected for the second time.

Duke led all schools with four student-athletes on the men's team, followed by Boston College with three, North Carolina with two and Notre Dame with one. On the women's team, Notre Dame and Duke each had five student-athletes earn the recognition.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September of 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their careers, as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.

To be eligible for the All-ACC Academic Teams, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.0 grade point average for both the previous semester and as a cumulative average during their academic career as undergraduate students. Athletic achievements during the most recent season also factored into the selection process.

The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
