MARIBOR, Slovenia – Duke fencing volunteer assistant coach and Blue Devil alumna Leslie Marx captured gold in Women's Vet-50 Epee at the 2017 Veteran World Championships.
Marx claimed the title of World Champion in her first year eligible to compete at the Vet Worlds.
Marx registered a 5-1 mark in pool play to earn the sixth seed and a bye into the table of 32, where she cruised to a 10-1 victory over Arianne Moser of Sweden.
After a 10-5 win over Italy's Diana Bonato in the table of 16, Marx guaranteed a medal with a 10-6 victory over Frauke Hohlbein of Germany.
Edging out Italy's Ewa Borowa 7-6 in the semifinals, Marx faced Pia Albertson of Sweden for gold to claim the easy 10-5 victory.
A 1989 graduate of Duke, Marx is one of the most celebrated Blue Devil fencers, having won the 1995 Pan American Championship as well as finishing 16th in women's epee at the 1996 Olympics.
Following graduation at Duke with a degree in mathematics, she went on to get her Ph.D. in economics from Northwestern. Marx returned to Duke in 2002 and is currently the Robert A. Bandeen Professor of Economics at the Fuqua School of Business.
