Blue Devils Open Season at Southeast Open Sunday

DURHAM, N.C.—The Duke wrestling team will get its first glimpse at wrestlers in different singlets Sunday, Nov. 6 when the Blue Devils travel to Salem, Va., for the Southeast Open. Previously called the Hokie Open, wrestling action gets underway Sunday morning with live streaming from FloWrestling starting at 10 a.m.

 

How to Watch

The entire Southeast Open can be watched on FloArena with all of the matches being streamed live beginning at 10 a.m. The Southeast Open will also be run on FloArena so every match will be instantly archived.

 

Looking at the Southeast Open Field

The field at the 2016 Southeast Open includes 17 teams, including five of the six programs in the ACC. Nearly 600 wrestlers will compete in the day-long tournament with a collection of top 20 wrestlers among the group vying for titles. The lineup of teams consists of: Virginia Tech, Virginia, Old Dominion, Duke, NC State, North Carolina, Maryland, Princeton, West Virginia, Edinboro, VMI, George Mason, Campbell, Rider, American, Appalachian State, and Army.

New to the Duke Corner

A new face will be in Duke's corner this season. Brandon Nelsen joined the Blue Devil wrestling staff this summer after serving as a graduate assistant at the University of Indianapolis. A two-time NCAA qualifier for Purdue, Nelsen wrestled at 141 and 149 pounds for the Boilermakers. He finished his career with an 84-55 overall record and graduated sixth in career falls with 30.

 

New Weights for Blue Devils

A collection of Blue Devils will see their first competition at their new weights Sunday. Headlining the changes is Jacob Kasper, who moves from 184 to heavyweight. He put on 50 pounds of muscle to bump up two weight classes as he looks to earn his second NCAA qualification. Connor Bass is moving up from 157 to 174 this season, while Alex Belaia-Martiniouk will wrestle up at 197 from 184. Xaviel Ramos also will move from 133 a year ago to a more competitive 149 for the veteran.

Recapping the 2015 Hokie Open

Duke brought home three titles and seven top-six finishes at the 2015 Hokie Open. Connor BassJake Faust and Conner Hartmann each earned top honors for the Blue Devils. Thayer Atkins took fourth overall at 125 pounds, while Zach Finesilver earned fifth place in his first action in a Blue Devil singlet. Araad Sarrami finished sixth at heavyweight, while competing unattached.

Dual Matches Await Blue Devils

The Blue Devils open their dual slate next weekend, traveling to Boone, N.C., to wrestle No. 15 Oregon State. The first bout is set for 12 p.m., at Appalachian State. Duke opens its home schedule the following weekend with 13th-ranked Wisconsin Nov. 18 at 7 p.m.
