DWS Freshman Spotlight: Brooke Heinsohn

DURHAM, N.C.— As the Duke women's soccer program gets set to open practice Wednesday, Aug. 3, GoDuke.com would like to introduce the members of the fourth-ranked recruiting class in the nation that includes Emma Carlson of Lilburn, Ga., Olivia Erlbeck of San Diego, Calif., Mia Gyau of Colesville, Md., Brooke Heinsohn of Norfolk, Mass., Lexi Magliarditi of Newport Coast, Calif., Ella Stevens of Grayson, Ga., Emily Wilson of Potomac, Md., and Mackenzie Coles of Wexford, Pa.

The second rookie that will be spotlighted is Brooke Heinsohn, who is a 6-1 goalkeeper from Norfolk, Md.  The 2015 Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Massachusetts. One of the top goalkeepers in the nation, Heinsohn allowed only two goals in 11 matches as a senior.  The recent TeamSnap All-America honoree registered shutouts in all three playoff matches as Rivers School won the Class B title and finished ranked No. 1 in the TopDrawerSoccer Prep Top 10.  Heinsohn, who hails from Norfolk, Mass., continues to train with the U-20 and U-18 Women's National Teams.

Get to Know Heinsohn --

What do you enjoy most about playing soccer?
It's always been fun going to practice where I'm with my teammates who are my friends. I love doing shooting drills or the fun, competitive games like 6v6 that get everyone excited and ready to play. I think that the fact that certain drills like these can make people laugh and have so much fun while playing soccer at the same time is really cool. I also love that I have a team of people who I know will always be there for me and I can always talk to whenever or in whatever type of situation I'm in.

What age did you start playing soccer?
When I was about 5 years old.

When/why did you decide soccer was going to be your sport you concentrated on?
I never stopped playing soccer once I started but I decided I was going to be serious about it and have it be “my sport” when I was about 12 when I decided to only be a goalkeeper and not a field player as well.

What are you most looking forward to when you arrive on campus at Duke?
Getting to meet new, amazing people all the time. At Duke, there are so many people who are amazing at either one thing or many things and I'm really excited to meet all the incredible people there. I'm also excited to get out of my comfort zone and take new classes I would have never thought about taking, putting myself out there in order to meet new people, and finally go to a school with excellent academics as well as excellent soccer.

Who has had the greatest influence on your game?
I think my younger self has had a lot of influence on my game. It's kind of weird to think about, but when I was younger, in about third grade, I made the decision that I wanted to go to Duke (my parents went there). Also, I remember being a little girl looking up at the national team players in my area when I would see them train or see them playing in a game and I told myself I want to be like them one day. When I'm doing a workout that I maybe am struggling with or aren't feeling up to on the day, I think about what I told myself when I was younger and how hard I was willing to work back then and that makes me work hard in the moment.

What are you doing this summer?
Playing a lot of soccer (every day), coaching, working at a hospital in my area and trying to hang out with my friends before they all leave for college. Hopefully this summer I can get a couple coaching licenses.

Quick Hitters:

Favorite Athlete: Tommy Heinsohn

Biggest Thrill in Sports: Making the game winning save in the last minute or so of the game. Or making a breakaway save when it's just you and the striker.

Biggest Disappointment in Sports: Not winning a game or making a team you know you have worked so hard to win or make.

Goals Upon Graduation: Get ready for college (fitness wise and academically).  When I get to school I want to branch out to meet new people, go to the social offerings and take advantage of all that Duke has to offer because it will be the last time I have the opportunity to do some of the things that I have the chance to do in college.

Hobbies: Cooking, traveling, and coaching

Other sports you played growing up: Basketball

Relatives involved in athletics:
Dad played football at Duke, my oldest sister played soccer in college, and my grandfather played, coached and announces for the Boston Celtics.

Favorite soccer player to watch:
Joe Hart or Ashlyn Harris

Favorite club:
Barcelona

Hidden/special talents:
I'm double jointed in both of my arms.
