DURHAM, N.C. – For the 10th straight year, the Duke volleyball program received the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award as announced by the organization Monday.
First instituted in 1992, the AVCA Team Academic Award goes to collegiate and high school volleyball programs that maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.30 for the academic year.
The Blue Devils have earned the academic recognition every year since the 2006-07 campaign and 12 times over the past 13 seasons. In addition, Duke was one of three ACC schools to earn the honor in 2016, joining Florida State, Louisville, NC State and Virginia Tech. The AVCA recognized 762 teams, including 131 NCAA Division I programs.
Four Blue Devils – setter Maggie Deichmeister, libero Sasha Karelov, outside hitter Emily Sklar and middle blocker Jordan Tucker -- collected 2015 All-ACC Academic Team distinction this past season, while 14 members of the Duke volleyball team earned a spot on the 2015-16 ACC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a GPA of 3.0 for the current academic year.
Duke opens the 2016 campaign Aug. 26 against UNCG in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
