Smith, Lindsay Hoping to Bring Home Gold

DURHAM, N.C.—Duke men's lacrosse rising sophomore Brad Smith and incoming freshman Terry Lindsay are gearing up for the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) Under-19 Men's World Lacrosse Championships in Coquitlam, British Columbia. The tournament, featuring 15 teams from around the world, runs July 7-16.

Smith and Lindsay are the sixth and seventh Blue Devils to participate for Team USA in the FiL U-19 World Championships. Previous representatives were current assistant coach Matt Danowski, CJ Costabile, Justin Turri, Kyle Keenan and Kyle Turri. Justin missed the event after being selected due to injury.

The United States is in the Blue Division with Canada, Iriquois Nationals, Australia, England. The red, whilte and blue open the championship with Canada July 7 at 10:30 p.m. (ET). Group play runs through July 12 and quarterfinals get underway July 13. The Gold Medal Game is July 16 at 7 p.m.

Smith was a member of the second midfield line for the Blue Devils as a rookie. The Mountain Lakes, N.J., native finished the year with nine goals and five assists for 14 points. He came on strong in the final month of the season, tallying six points in the last five games of the year. Overall, Smith was one of two rookies to play in all 19 games for Duke.

Lindsay, a product of Georgetown Prep, likely will run on the same midfield line with Smith for Team USA. An Under Armour All-American pick, he helped guide Georgetown Prep to a 12-7 overall record in 2016. He was an All-I.A.C., All-State, and All-Met honorable mention selection as a junior midfielder at Georgetown Prep and was tabbed fifth by Inside Lacrosse in its young gun junior rankings in 2014.

At least one Blue Devil has played on each of the past three U-19 squads that captured gold. In 2012, the U.S. defeated Canada 10-8 to bring home the title. The United States has won every U-19 world title since the tournament started in 1988.
