LONDON – Former Blue Devil standout Stefanie Fee and the United States women's national field hockey team captured bronze in the Champions Trophy Sunday with a thrilling shootout victory over Australia.
The teams played to a 2-2 tie through regulation, and Team USA prevailed in the shootout by a 1-0 score to win the third-place match at the international tournament.
The U.S. opened the tournament with a 2-2 draw against Australia, the third-ranked country in the International Hockey Federation (FIH) world rankings. The squad then dropped a pair of 4-1 matches to second-ranked Argentina and top-ranked Holland before rebounding with a 2-0 victory over host Great Britain. Team USA closed out pool play with a 1-1 draw against New Zealand.
Prior to heading to London, the U.S. went up against Holland in a series of test matches in The Netherlands. After falling in the first friendly, Team USA toppled their top-ranked opponents by a score of 3-2 in the second contest.
One more competition remains for the U.S. national team before the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. The squad will host a Rio Send-Off Series against India and Canada July 18-26 at Spooky Nook Sports in Lancaster, Pa.
Fee helped Team USA capture a medal for the second consecutive summer. The U.S. won gold at last year's Pan American Games in Toronto, punching its ticket to Rio.
