Four Named to All-ACC Rowing Academic Team

DURHAM, N.C. – Four members of the Duke rowing team were selected to the All-ACC Academic Team, as announced by the league office Thursday. Seniors Simone Pitre and Alex Stonehill, sophomore Katherine Maitland and freshman Karley Whelan represented the Blue Devils. The selection is the second for Pitre and Stonehill and the first for Maitland and Whelan.

Last month, Stonehill was a First Team All-ACC honoree while Pitre picked up second-team all-league accolades. Stonehill was also a Second Team Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Pocock All-America pick.

Stonehill, Maitland and Whelan were members of the V8 for the entire season as it placed second during the ACC Championship with a year-best 6:20.444 mark in helping Duke come in second overall, its best at the event since 2006. The V8 finished 18th at the NCAA Championships as the Blue Devils finished 17th overall. Entering the NCAA Championships, the trio guided Duke to its highest ranking ever by the CRCA, checking in 12th.

Pitre led the V8 for all but three races and earned Second Team All-ACC accolades. She shifted to the 2V8 for the final race of the regular season and led the boat during the ACC Championship, as it took second place with a photo finish against Notre Dame. The 2V8 also captured the NCAA C Final title with a time of 6:34.803.

To be nominated for the All-ACC Academic team, student-athletes must have recorded a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average in the winter semester and have maintained a 3.0 career GPA at their respective schools.

Virginia's Tessa Dikkers was named the ACC's Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Dikkers, a double major in public policy and leadership and foreign affairs, sat in the stroke seat of Virginia's V8 that captured the ACC Rowing title and finished fifth nationally at the NCAA Championships.

Notre Dame led all ACC schools with nine honorees, followed by Louisville with eight. Virginia, Clemson and Syracuse each had seven, followed by Miami with six, and Boston College, Duke and North Carolina with four each.
