GREENSBORO, N.C. – Five members of the Duke men's golf program were announced as members of the 2015-16 All-ACC Academic Team on Tuesday in a release by the league office.
Sophomores Adam Wood and Jake Shuman both earned the honor for the second time in as many years, while junior Max Greyserman, junior Matt Oshrine and freshman Alex Smalley each earned the acclaim for the first time.
Wood led Duke with a 71.94 stroke average in 33 rounds, marking the ninth-best single-season stroke average in program history. He finished in the top 10 at seven tournaments in 12 starts, including three top-five finishes. The Zionsville, Ind., native's 10 rounds in the 60s tied for the second-best single-season total by a Duke player, and his 19 rounds at par or better in 2015-16 tied for sixth on Duke's single-season list.
Wood, a statistics major, was named PING All-East Region in May for the second consecutive season, and was also an All-ACC selection in 2016. He was one of six members of this year's All-ACC squad to also be named to the All-ACC Academic Team.
Shuman ranked fourth on the team with a 72.97 scoring average in 33 rounds in 2015-16. Duke's hottest player in the latter stages of the season, he turned in a string of three consecutive top-five finishes that included a tie for second place at the 2016 ACC Championship.
The sociology major posted 13 rounds at par or better on the campaign, including a half-dozen rounds in the 60s.
Greyserman recorded a 73.20 stroke average in 30 rounds during the 2015-16 season, finishing in the top 10 at a total of four tournament and securing top-five finishes at two of those events. The public policy studies major led Duke in putts per round (29.30) and par-five scoring (4.70), while tallying 13 rounds at par or better.
Oshrine, an economics major, ranked second on the team with a 72.82 stroke average in 33 rounds in 2015-16, his first season at Duke. He was named ACC Golfer of the Month in March after winning the Seahawk Intercollegiate, and he finished the campaign with a total of four top-10 performances.
Oshrine led the Blue Devils in par-three scoring in 2015-16 (3.10), and carded par or better in 14 of his 33 rounds.
Smalley ranked third on the team with a 72.67 stroke average, the third-best in Duke history by a freshman, in 33 rounds. He won the Princeton Invitational in April and produced a total of four top-10 showings in his first collegiate season.
The Wake Forest, N.C., native tied Duke's freshman record with 11 rounds under par for the season and his 16 rounds at par or better were the second-most ever by a Duke freshman. Smalley, who has not declared a major, was named PING All-East Region in May.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during a student's academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the team.
