Maguire Wins Women?s Ulster Open Championship

IRELAND – Duke University rising junior Lisa Maguire won the Ulster Women's Open Championship Tuesday at the Royal Belfast Golf Club in Ireland.

A native of Cavan, Ireland, Maguire registered four match play wins after finishing second in stroke play qualifying with rounds of 76 and 77.

Maguire kicked off the match play portion Monday morning with a 4&2 victory over Helen Jones and then knocked off Jenny Young 2&1 in the afternoon.  In the semifinals Tuesday morning, Maguire registered a par on the 19th hole to win 1-up against Georgia Carr.

In the championship, Maguire went up against Aedin Murphy, who won her home club's Scratch Cup earlier in the season and was third in stroke play qualifying.

Maguire went 2-up through nine and was three-up after 12, after registering a par.  After dropping hole No. 13, Maguire and Murphy halved the par fives 15 and 16 with birdies and pars to leave Maguire dormie with two holes remaining.

After leaving her approach shot just short of the green, Maguire chipped her ball to two feet for par.  Murphy's birdie attempt edged past the hole and the championship was awarded to Maguire.

“I feel great,” said Maguire.  “I played solid golf and I was tested in each round I played. Aiden is a tough opponent and Royal Belfast is a top class course. I am very pleased to win and to have my mom on my bag.”
