CLEMSON, S.C. – The Duke rowing team battled through adverse weather conditions to clock a fifth-place finish in the varsity eight and a pair of top-five finishes in the third and fourth varsity eight on the first day of the Clemson Invitational Saturday afternoon on Lake Hartwell.

On a day dominated by strong winds, Duke's top boat posted a time of 7:20.3 to place fifth behind UCLA, Cornell, Louisville and Michigan State in the varsity eight while edging Penn and Miami. The afternoon session of the event was postponed to Sunday, which will now pit Duke against the field in 10 races beginning with the varsity eight at 7:59 a.m.

Duke also placed sixth in the second varsity eight and varsity four, defeating Miami in the seven-boat race in both of those events. Duke's 2V8 turned in a time of 7:53.0, while the V4 clocked a 9:04.0.

The Blue Devils also deployed boats in a pair of 3V8 races, sending a 3V8 that placed fourth with a time of 8:20.03 and a 4V8 that took fifth at 8:35.0.

Each of Duke's five boats will race twice Sunday, beginning with the varsity eight during the morning session. Duke will then send the 2V8 (8:20 a.m.), V4 (8:41 a.m.),     4V8 (9:09 a.m.) and 3V8 (9:16 a.m.) over the remainder of the first session before pushing off in the V8 at 9:37 a.m. followed by the 2V8 (9:58 a.m.), V4 (10:19 a.m.), 3V8 (10:40 a.m.) and 4V8 (10:54 a.m.).
