Box Score RIVIERA MAYA, Mexico – Eleven different Blue Devils scored to guide Duke to a season-high output in an 86-48 victory over Iowa State Friday afternoon. The 15th-ranked Blue Devils won their second contest in as many days at the Cancun Challenge to move to 5-1 on the season.
Three Blue Devils reached double figures in the scoring column, with redshirt sophomore Rebecca Greenwell totaling 15 on a 3-for-6 performance from three-point range. Sophomore Azurá Stevens chipped in 14 points in her 21st consecutive double-figure scoring contest and junior Oderah Chidom collected the fourth double-double of her career. Chidom stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, 11 rebounds and three assists.
Duke outscored the Cyclones 46-26 in the paint and shot 50 percent from the field (36-of-72) while limiting Iowa State to 28 percent shooting (17-of-60). Chidom's 11 boards, coupled with seven from Greenwell, led the Blue Devils to a 50-33 advantage on the boards.
While coming out with a fast tempo, both teams struggled to convert in the early minutes. Iowa State had a 9-4 advantage midway through the first quarter before a Greenwell trey put the Blue Devils back in front. Despite turning the ball over seven times in the opening 10 minutes, Duke led by four heading into the second period.
The run continued in the next frame, as the Blue Devils stretched the margin to double digits. Freshman Haley Gorecki came off the bench to drain a pair of three-pointers and Stevens notched eight first-half points to lift Duke to a 39-24 halftime lead.
Ten different Blue Devils scored in the first two quarters, giving the Blue Devils a 20-4 advantage over the Cyclones in points off the bench. Duke also had the upper hand on the glass behind six rebounds by Chidom and four from freshman Kyra Lambert.
Iowa State tried to mount a comeback in the third quarter, sinking 7-of-10 at the free throw line. However, freshman Angela Salvadores responded with a trey near the end of the period that kept the Blue Devils ahead, 57-39.
Duke outscored Iowa State 29-9 in the final 10 minutes and took their largest lead at 38 in the waning seconds. The Blue Devils rounded out the contest on an 18-0 run with Greenwell keying two treys and a layup down the stretch.
Bryanna Fernstrom paced the Cyclones with 15 points and five rebounds while Seanna Johnson pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
Following the wins over Idaho and Iowa State, Duke will wrap up the Cancun Challenge Saturday at 1:30 p.m. ET against Texas State.
