This summer, Duke Football will run a position preview, produced by Duke Football Video, with head coach David Cutcliffe every Monday on GoDuke.com. DURHAM, N.C. – With fall camp starting next week, the next-to-last installment of Duke's position previews with head coach
David Cutcliffe discusses the Blue Devils' wide receiving corps.
Departed from last year's group is the ACC's all-time leading receiver, and fourth round NFL Draft pick of the Washington Redskins,
Jamison Crowder. Also gone is reliable threat
Issac Blakeney, who signed with the San Francisco 49ers in the offseason.
The 2015 group will be led by senior
Max McCaffrey, who started all 13 games last year and had 37 receptions for 385 yards (10.41 ypc) and three touchdowns. He ranked third on the team in catches, receiving yardage and touchdown receptions last year to Crowder and Blakeney. Junior
Johnell Barnes will also be expected to have a large role in this year's receiving corps. He played in all 13 games last year, catching 23 passes for 237 yards (10.30 ypc) and a touchdown. He ranked fourth on the team in both receptions and receiving yardage.
Adding depth to the unit will be junior
Ryan Smith, who could also compete for punt return duties. One of the quickest players on the team, Smith ran for the Blue Devil track and field program in the spring and ran the leadoff leg of the 4x100 relay team at the Penn Relays as Duke finished 19th with a time of 41.63 to post the fourth-fastest time in school history. Expected to have an impact on this year's unit are redshirt freshmen
Trevon Lee and
Chris Taylor.
