DURHAM, N.C. – Duke field hockey goalkeeper Lauren Blazing received first team Capital One Academic All-America distinction for the second consecutive year, as announced Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The rising redshirt senior from Durham, N.C., was one of 15 student-athletes selected to the Division I Women's At-Large First Team. She is the only student-athlete in program history to garner Academic All-America honors. In addition, Blazing is just the seventh student-athlete at Duke to receive Academic All-America recognition as a member of an at-large team, and the 33rd Duke student-athlete to be selected to the Academic All-America first team since 1959. She is the 17th Duke student-athlete to earn multiple Academic All-America selections and the third to do so as a member of an at-large team (Amanda Blumenherst, 2007-09, women's golf; Max Quinzani, 2008-10, men's lacrosse).
Blazing put together another strong campaign in goal during the 2014 season, earning National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) second team All-America accolades to go along with first team All-South Region and All-ACC honors. Her .786 save percentage led all ACC goalkeepers for the fall, while her 1.19 goals against average ranked second in the conference.
Now a two-time Academic All-America honoree, Blazing holds a 3.99 GPA as a cultural anthropology and political science major. She was tabbed the ACC Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year earlier this spring and garnered her third selection to the All-ACC Academic Team. Blazing also was named an NFHCA Scholar of Distinction for the third straight year and named to the NFHCA National Academic Squad for the fourth time in her career.
