Alvarez Receives NCAA Singles Championship Bid

DURHAM, N.C. – Sophomore Nicolas Alvarez has been selected to represent Duke at the 2016 NCAA Singles Championship from May 25-30 at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla., according to an announcement by the NCAA on Wednesday.

Alvarez received an at-large bid to compete in the 64-player singles field. It is the second straight year he has made an appearance, becoming the 15th Blue Devil to attend the NCAA's prime event in back-to-back campaigns. Duke has had at least one player selected to compete in the NCAA Singles Championships for nine consecutive seasons.

The Lima, Peru, product served as the Blue Devils' top singles player for all but one dual match this spring. Alvarez led Duke with 10 wins against ranked opponents and tied for second on the squad with 17 victories. The first team All-ACC selection also tied for the top spot on the squad with six league triumphs. Alvarez posted a 17-14 overall record, 13-10 dual mark and 6-5 league ledger while earning his second straight first team all-league honor. He has been among the top 26 in the Oracle/ITA rankings all season.

Action at the NCAA Singles Championship begins Wednesday, May 25 with the first round starting at 10 a.m. All matches shall be the best-of-three sets.  No-ad scoring and a seven-point tiebreaker at six-games-all will be used for all matches.
