EUGENE, Ore. – Duke men's golfers Adam Wood and Alex Smalley were honored for stellar 2015-16 seasons on Sunday when they were named to the PING All-East Region team by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).
Wood, a sophomore, earned All-East Region honors for the second time in as many collegiate seasons, while Smalley collected the honor at the end of a standout freshman campaign.
Wood led Duke with a 71.94 stroke average in 33 rounds, marking the ninth-best single-season stroke average in program history. He finished in the top 10 at seven tournaments in 12 starts, including three top-five finishes. The Zionsville, Ind., native's 10 rounds in the 60s tied for the second-best single-season total by a Duke player, and his 19 rounds at par or better in 2015-16 tied for sixth on Duke's single-season list.
Smalley ranked third on the team with a 72.67 stroke average, the third-best in Duke history by a freshman, in 33 rounds. He won the Princeton Invitational in April and produced a total of four top-10 showings in his first collegiate season.
The Wake Forest, N.C., native tied Duke's freshman record with 11 rounds under par for the season and his 16 rounds at par or better were the second-most ever by a Duke freshman.
The Blue Devils posted three team victories in 2015-16 and wrapped up the campaign at the NCAA Stillwater Regional, their seventh regional appearance in eight years under the direction of head coach Jamie Green.
