DURHAM, N.C. – Sophomore attacker Kyra Harney became the third Blue Devil to garner national player of the week recognition this season, receiving the accolade from the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Wednesday.
The honor was announced during the IWLCA's new weekly show, “Fast Break: IWLCA College Lacrosse Weekly,” which airs each Wednesday evening on Lax Sports Network.
Harney turned in a five-point effort Saturday to help Duke overtake 11th-ranked Boston College by a 12-8 score. She tallied three first-half goals and an assist as the Blue Devils built a 7-4 lead by the intermission. After the Eagles came back to knot the contest early in the second period, she added an insurance goal inside the final four minutes.
A native of Bay Shore, N.Y., Harney has registered at least one point in all but one contest on the season and has topped the 50-point mark this spring for the first time in her career.
She currently paces the Blue Devils in points (52), goals (38), game-winning goals (3) and hat tricks (8). Harney is third in the ACC in goals per game (2.71) and fourth in points per game (3.71) while ranking among the top 40 players in the country in both categories.
Up next, Harney and the Blue Devils visit No. 7 Notre Dame Saturday at 12 p.m.
