Seniors Reflect on Time with Duke Football

DURHAM, N.C. -- Following the 2015 group of senior's final game, numerous members of the class discussed what their time at Duke meant to them. We have highlights from the group below.

Ross Martin, K, Solon, Ohio
This has truly been the most incredible journey I could've ever imagined. And to go out in this fashion is a dream come true. Coach Cut has transformed this entire program through loving each of his players and by coaching the hell out of us both on and off the field. I'm forever grateful to him and the University for shaping me into the person i am today. I also cant thank enough all of the Duke fans everywhere for being there for us and supporting my teammates and i for these past 4 years. While it is difficult to swallow that my time in a Duke uniform is finished, I cant wait to see the continued growth and prosperity of our program as they reach even higher goals. I also cant thank my parents enough for traveling literally across the country never missing one of my 53 games. Thank you again Duke nation and I hope to have given you all a fraction of what I've taken from my time playing. I cant wait to pursue my NFL aspirations this Spring, but I'll forever bleed Duke blue and DukeGang will always be my brothers. #35

The best way to sum up my five years at Duke is with one word, love. The reason, love provides a deeper commitment among other facets in the program. You sacrifice for the ones you love in summer conditioning in order to finish the season strong. You care for your brothers deeply when times get tough and know that when your number is called both on and off the field it's time to perform. Ultimately it is care from every coach who looks upon us as men they are shaping into future husbands, fathers, and figures in our future community. The embodiment of love among DukeGang is so strong that it sustains the program day in and day out, and is what drove me to push this program I have worked so hard for, to new heights every year.

Almost a week after I played my last game in a Duke uniform and I still can't believe it's true! The past four and a half years have been the greatest and most challenging years of my life. I thank the Lord every chance I get for bringing me to Duke and the people I've come to know while there. The relationships I have made with my teammates, coaches, athletics department staff, football staff and fans have been unbelievable and their support has been unparalleled. I want to thank Coach Cuttcliffe and Coach Roper specifically for believing in me and giving me the opportunity start for the last four years. I'm proud to say with the support of everyone at Duke and a lot of hard work, I am in a position to continue chasing my dream of playing in the NFL! I look forward to the opportunity of representing myself, my family, Duke University and DUKEGANG! Lastly it's amazing to say I'm a Pinstripe Bowl CHAMPION and forever DUKEGANG! God Bless and Go Duke!

Speaking for my teammates and I, Dukegang has become a part of our DNA. Everything we do in life is influenced and guided by things we have learned here. When life knocks us down, it is a race to get back up as quickly as possible, because we always treat the ground like a “hot stove.” When we make mistakes, we move on swiftly because we are always ready for the “next play.” When opportunities come at us out of nowhere, we capitalize on them because we always “gotta have those!”

When life gets difficult, we are already well equipped because we are built on "discipline and conditioning.” We set ourselves up to succeed based on the principles of 55: starting with “alignment,” we put ourselves in great position; next we master our “assignments,” fully understanding the task at hand; then we “execute" to perfection each detail of our jobs; we have incredible “effort,” surpassing that of any competitors; we “finish” by seeing every task all the way through to the very end, especially when others want to call it quits.

We go hard in “Football,” but when it ends we move on to our “Future,” which we have been working towards all along. When our futures seem unclear or uncertain, we fall back on our “Family,” the net of intimate relationships we have formed with people in our lives. And when people fail, we always have a firm foundation in our “Faith,” for life begins with the Lord.

Dukegang is a culture that I intend to bring everywhere with me. It is attractive and constructive. It creates an environment in which everyone can thrive, and it utilizes individuals' strengths. Dukegang is powerful. And best of all, we created it. It will always be a part of us.

It's crazy how fast time flies. This time 5 years ago I was probably getting ready for a basketball game at GHS. I had college football scholarship offers, but I didn't know for sure where I would attend . I'm so glad I made the decision to come to Duke University to be a member of the football family and make history.

It hasn't been easy, but this experience has been great. I've been blessed with the opportunity to travel the country playing the game I love while simultaneously earning my degree from a great university. I'm thankful for my family and friends and all of the support you've shown over these years. I'm also grateful for my DukeGang brothers and the Duke Football staff everything we've been able to accomplish. My time as a college player is over, but I'm also excited for what the future holds for me.
