PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Freshmen Ellyse Hamlin and Kaitlyn McCarthy remained perfect at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships Sunday afternoon, with each securing a spot in the qualifying singles draw of the one-week tournament in Pacific Palisades, Calif. A finalized qualifying singles draw is scheduled for release Monday.
McCarthy, a native of Cary, N.C., defeated her opponent, Caroline Wegner of TCU in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5, and will take on 59th-ranked Gabby Smith of USC Tuesday. McCarthy has not dropped a contest in her college career, and currently owns a perfect 6-0 record this season.
Hamlin outlasted her opponent, Alexis Casati of Illinois, over three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. The Fairfield, Conn., native has dropped just one singles match over her young college career. Hamlin heads into competition Tuesday against 103rd-ranked Gabriela Talaba of Texas Tech with an overall ledger of 4-1.
Senior Beatrice Capra is scheduled to join Hamlin and McCarthy in the qualifying singles draw. The Ellicott City, Md., native is slated to face Fresno State's 54th-ranked Sophie Watts.
Duke's doubles pair of Capra and Hamlin also takes the court Tuesday at noon, facing the top-seeded Florida State tandem of Gabriela Castaneda and Emily Fanning in the qualifying doubles draw of the tournament.
Both singles and doubles qualifying draw play begin Tuesday, Oct. 6.
