DURHAM, N.C. – The Blue Devils will be represented at the NCAA Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championship for the sixth consecutive season this weekend in Iowa City, Iowa. The championship meet gets underway Thursday, March 26 at the Hawkeyes' Campus Recreation and Wellness Center and continues through Saturday, March 28.
Preliminaries begin at 12 p.m. ET Thursday, Friday and Saturday, followed by finals at 8 p.m. ET each day. For more information, visit the championship homepage.
Sophomore Peter Kropp was invited to compete in the 100-yard breaststroke at the NCAA Championship after surpassing the automatic standard during the fall with a 52.02 swim at the Janis Hape Dowd Nike Cup Invitational. That clocking broke the previous ACC record in the event and seeds Kropp seventh in the field heading into the weekend. He is also eligible to compete in the 200 breaststroke (1:55.05) and the 200 IM (1:47.01) after earning provisional cuts in those events during the regular season.
Kropp will be joined in Iowa City by 200 medley relay teammates Kaz Takabayashi, David Armstrong and James Peek. The group garnered the program's first NCAA 'A' cut in a relay event since the new qualification standards were implemented. Their school record-breaking mark of 1:25.03 at last month's ACC Championship in Atlanta was good for a podium finish in second. The Blue Devils' entry time seeds them 12th entering the NCAA meet.
Sophomore Michael Miller, Duke's record holder in the 200 butterfly, 200 IM and 400 IM, will travel to Iowa City to serve as an alternate for the relay.
The top eight finishers in each event at the NCAA Championships will earn first team All-America honors, while places nine through 16 will garner honorable mention All-America accolades.
The 100 breaststroke and the 200 medley relay trials are both slated for Friday, March 27 while the 200 IM trials will be held Thursday, March 26 and the 200 breaststroke trials Saturday, March 29 in Iowa City.
