ATHENS, Ga. – Coming off collecting the team and individual titles at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate earlier this month, the third-ranked Duke women's golf team will travel to Athens, Ga., for the 2015 Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic March 27-29, which will be played on the 6,401-yard, par 72 University of Georgia Golf Course.
The tournament will feature one qualifying round of stroke play Friday, March 27 and then two rounds of match play March 28-29. The top eight teams from qualifying will make up the “Red” bracket and the remaining four teams in the “Black” bracket.
Competing this weekend will be Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Baylor, Duke, Georgia, Northwestern, Purdue, South Carolina, Southern California, Stanford and UCLA. The field includes teams which have won 13 of the past 15 NCAA Championships.
It will mark the first time Duke has competed in the Liz Murphey Collegiate since the tournament moved to a match play format. Southern California took home the team championship in 2014 with wins over Auburn, N.C. State and Arkansas. The 2015 NCAA Championship has moved to stroke play qualifying followed by match play this year to decide the champion.
In the last tournament for the Blue Devils, freshman
Leona Maguire won the individual title on a one-hole playoff as she turned in rounds of 73, 65 and 69 for a six-under-par, 207. Duke collected ledgers of 293, 283 and 282 to claim its second team title of the season with a 54-hole total of 858.
