Blue Devils Awarded No. 3 Seed in NCAA Tournament

DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women's lacrosse team will host NCAA Tournament action at Koskinen Stadium for the first time since 2012, as announced Sunday evening during the NCAA Division I Women's Lacrosse Selection Show on NCAA.com. The program received the No. 3 seed for its highest seeding since the 2007 campaign, and will make its 18th consecutive appearance in the postseason tournament.

The Blue Devils (14-4), currently ranked fourth in the nation, received a first-round bye and will face the winner of a matchup between James Madison (15-4) and Southern California (13-5) in the second round Sunday, May 10 at 2 p.m. at Koskinen Stadium. The 17th-ranked Dukes and the Trojans will square off in the first round Friday, May 8 at 7 p.m. in Durham. James Madison claimed the CAA title earlier Sunday with a 13-6 win over Towson while Southern California received an at-large bid into the tournament after reaching the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation final.

Duke is 2-0 all-time against James Madison in the NCAA Tournament but has never faced Southern California in the postseason event. The Blue Devils are 14-3 historically in NCAA contests played at home in Durham.

The Duke program received its first NCAA Tournament bid in 1998 and has made an appearance in the postseason event every year since. Under the direction of head coach Kerstin Kimel, the Blue Devils are 2-0 in NCAA second round action and 21-17 all-time in NCAA competition with six trips to the national semifinals (1999, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2011).

Coming off of their 14th national quarterfinals appearance in 2014, the Blue Devils have been ranked among the top eight teams in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association polls the entire spring while reaching a season-high ranking of No. 3. The squad started the season strong, winning 11 of its first 12 contests, and has gone 7-4 overall against ranked opponents. Duke's balanced attack features nine different players with double digits in the goals column while the defensive unit led the ACC last week in goals against average.

The Blue Devils reached the semifinals of the 2015 ACC Championship and placed five players on the 2015 All-ACC teams. Senior attacker Kerrin Maurer headlined the team's selections, earning a spot on the first team, while junior goalkeeper Kelsey Duryea, junior defender Claire Scarrone and senior midfielders Katie Trees and Taylor Trimble were all named to the second team. Maurer and Duryea were also tabbed two of 25 finalists for the 2015 Tewaaraton Award.
